Tips for Better Coffee at Home

Because your morning cup deserves more than just “good enough,” here are some simple tips to help you brew like a pro—without leaving your home. Whether you prefer a flat white or a long black, these tips will elevate your coffee experience:

1. Start with fresh beans

Coffee tastes best when freshly ground. Store your beans in an airtight container, away from light, heat, and moisture, to keep them fresher for longer.

2. Use the right tools

A quality grinder makes all the difference. Opt for a burr grinder for consistent results, and experiment with different brewing methods, such as plungers, stovetop espresso makers, or pour-over kits, to achieve various flavor profiles.

3. Measure, don’t guess

The golden ratio for brewing coffee is about 1 to 2 tablespoons of coffee per 180 ml of water. Adjust the amount to suit your taste, but avoid relying on guesswork.

4. Mind your water temperature

Boiling water can scorch your coffee. Aim for water temperatures just off the boil, around 90 to 96°C, for a smooth brew.

5. Clean your gear

Old coffee oils and residue can lead to bitter brews. Rinse your equipment thoroughly after each use, and perform a deeper clean weekly.

6. Froth like a barista

If you want café-style lattes, invest in a good milk frother to achieve that creamy texture at home. Warm the milk gently and froth it in circular motions for the best bubbles.
